Food Finds
comment icon3 Comments

I started out life as a picky eater (my mom might say that is an understatement ~ apparently as a tot I thought eating was a waste of time!). But I eventually came to a point of great appreciation for food. I love to eat!

One thing I've find very interesting is how our taste buds change over time. During my university years I was surprised at all the new things I started liking that I'd previously sworn off ~ like mushrooms, cream gravy, coconut, and mustard to name a few.

Recently a few other foods came across my radar. At the end of my pregnancy with Ayden I developed a taste for fish and chips which is totally shocking because I normally don't eat fish of any kind. Seafood yes, but fish never! I also have never cared for pecans but have been warming up to them over the past few years. It all started with my friends Esther & Doris putting chocolate chips in the bottom of their pecan tarts. The chocolate lured me in. When we were in Texas my mother-in-law, Connie, made a pecan crusted chicken salad that got me really excited. My dad's a big fan of pecans so this is good news to him. Mayo is also a new one for me. I started liking it on my BLTs from Tim Horton's and have since added it to all my sandwiches. Growing up, everything I ordered was "plain and dry." One thing's for sure though, miracle whip is not a sufficient replacement for mayo...it's way too sweet. And speaking of too sweet, for the record, I will NEVER develop a taste for ketchup! Yuck! I think ketchup is an affront to tomatoes.

On another note, I've had a few new foods lately that I've never really tried before. My friend Suzanne made us some Manicotti. Wow, was it good! Then while in Colorado my dad made some homemade pesto with fresh basil. Jim and I raved about it all night long. I'm growing my own basil this year so I'll have to give that recipe a try. Jim and I are also on a pulled pork kick. Dad made some for us when he was up for Ayden's birth and while we were in Colorado, and Suzanne made some for my b-day in August. The pork is so good as a sandwich with mayo, tomatoes, and avocados or eaten Tex-Mex style wrapped up in a tortilla with salsa, beans and cheese.

What provoked me to write this random post I'm not exactly sure. I guess I was just thinking of my recent food finds. Has anything new tickled your taste buds lately?

Well, yes actually now that you mention it. I had never really appreciated the taste of Goldfish. You know the cheesy fish shaped, snack crackers. Even though I taught preschool for years and served my share of Goldfish treats, I really didn’t care for the taste. As I shopped for a special granddaughter who came to visit earlier this month I ran across a package of Goldfish of different colors. Thinking that Addie would enjoy a snack of Goldfish and that we could use the snack experience as a learning tool as well I picked up a package; or so I thought I had. When I got home I realized I had mistakenly picked up the Cheddar with Pretzel package instead. Oh well! Addie seemed to really enjoy the pretzel Goldfish instead of the cheesy ones, those she offered to me. I’ll treasure the times I sat on the kitchen floor sharing Goldfish and pretzels with my precious Granddaughter Addie. I loved every bite she offered me.

I used to not like steaks or hamburgers, but while I was pregnant I had to eat more red meat because I became anemic, and now I enjoy a good hamburger or steak.  Especially if David makes it!

I'm hungry now! I'm not nearly as picky as I used to be, either. I'm glad to know I can try out new recipes on you!
We love pesto, especially after eating it in the Ligurian Sea area in Italy, where it originated. We had it on bread and pasta every day when we were there. SO. GOOD.
